NTID's 50th: A look back

LBJ_Street.jpg

The National Technical Institute for the Deaf was created in 1965 following the passage of Public Law 89-36, the National Technical Institute for the Deaf Act. It was signed by President Lyndon Baines Johnson, and the search began immediately.

After reviewing several candidate universities around the country, the Rochester Institute of Technology in Henrietta, NY, was selected due to its strongly career-oriented technical programs.

NTID's first class of approximately 70 students enrolled in 1968. After an economic recession, funding became available for construction in 1972, and commenced through the next several years. This exhibit tells the story of that period of NTID's existence.

More exhibits will be forthcoming; keep an eye on this page!
